BiG Al is a pretty awesome guy. Doesn’t matter who you talk to in the business, from the people that run his multiple labels alongside him, to the labels he has worked with on releases, to the producers and DJ’s who have worked for him on his imprints, they will all tell you the same. He has been a fountain of information, support and in general just a really great guy to have in our circle of friends. It has been on the lips of many lately, including Mark Mac, about the community that has formed around several of the labels that recently released tracks on our “Deep House United” compilation. The reason for that has to do with people like BiG Al, who make it all seem like a rather family affair. He runs so many labels, to be honest I am not sure of all of them but these are the ones that stand out for me: Ready Mix Records, Empty Whisky Flask Records, Haute Musique, Tiny Lamp and Itom Records.
The track below was originally released on Ready Mix Records and is a lovely little groover of a track from Savvas. Working with labels and the people who run these labels like BiG Al, is a huge pleasure.
Q. Name and Favorite flavour of ice-cream?
A. Kardamon Flavor from India & Rose or Ashta Flavor from Lebanon.
Q. How long have you been making music?
A. DJ since 1989 >>> Producing since 1999
Q.How long have you been running your label and what made you decide to start it up?
A. 1999 so 14 years to be exact and started first as a platform to release my own music without the bureaucracy, A&Ring, paper work and restrictions that come with it. Secondly so I can put out some great music and help support and export the Canadian sound globally as well as introduce and import some of the Global sound into to Canada.
Q. Is it more rewarding to run Ready Mix Records (and all the others you have) or produce music?
A. Music always comes first of course. The label is just an extension to publicize the music we are making. “We can run a studio and make music without a label but we can never run a label without music.”
Q. Favorite Genre of music outside of what you produce?
A. I like everything that sounds good to my ears!!! No genre boundaries here. But if you insist, I like lounge, chill-out, afrobeat, ethnic rhythms and chants, downtempo, dub, reggae, world music, new age etc…etc… Anything intelligent!!!
Q. Must have piece of production software or equipment?
A. My Logic Audio Software for sure. It runs the show. 😉
Q. Favorite Social Media site for spreading the word about music?
A. Facebook & Twitter and Soundloud/Mixcloud for Sound Spreading.
Q. What is the question you wished people would ask you?
A. A Smart question! 😉
Q. Whats your favorite animal?
Q. What do you get up to outside of music?
A. Absolutely nothing. I have no time to do anything else. Running and managing 6 labels with over 200 artists signed + studio time, DJ gigs, travelling etc…. doesn’t leave me any time for anything else. I struggle for time to spend with my family.
